Overview

Stellar is a nonprofit-driven blockchain built for fast, cheap cross-border payments and asset issuance, with an explicit mission of expanding access to financial services in underbanked regions. It shares deep technical roots with the XRP Ledger but diverged into its own consensus design and organizational model.

History

Origins

Stellar was created in 2014 by Jed McCaleb, a co-creator of the XRP Ledger who left Ripple Labs after disagreements over strategy, together with Joyce Kim. The project initially forked the Ripple codebase before a critical 2014–2015 bug prompted a full rewrite around a new consensus mechanism. Stellar is developed and stewarded by the nonprofit Stellar Development Foundation (SDF) rather than a conventional for-profit company, though the for-profit company Lightyear.io (later merged into SDF) also played an early role.

Funding

Rather than an ICO, Stellar’s early funding came largely from a donation of roughly $3 million from payments company Stripe in 2014 in exchange for a stake of the initial XLM supply, along with later grants and partnerships (including with IBM on cross-border payment corridors). The Stellar Development Foundation holds a large share of total XLM supply, which it periodically burned down and otherwise allocates toward ecosystem grants.

Technology

Consensus Algorithm

Stellar uses the Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP), a federated Byzantine agreement model in which each node chooses its own “quorum slices” of trusted validators rather than relying on a single globally fixed validator set, aiming for fast finality without proof-of-work or conventional staking.

Network & Ecosystem

Stellar operates largely independently of the Ethereum/Cosmos/Polkadot ecosystems, though it has partnered with traditional financial institutions and payment companies (including MoneyGram in past pilots) and has increasingly positioned itself around regulated stablecoins and tokenized real-world assets, including a partnership to issue a USD-backed stablecoin (USDC) natively on the network.

Smart Contracts

For most of its life Stellar offered only limited, non-Turing-complete transaction logic. In 2023 it introduced Soroban, a WebAssembly-based smart contract platform supporting Rust (and other WASM-targeting languages), bringing more general-purpose programmability to the network.

Use Cases

Stellar’s stated goal from the outset was to bank the unbanked: cheap, fast cross-border payments, remittances, and asset tokenization aimed at people and institutions underserved by traditional banking rails, particularly in emerging markets.

Controversies & Incidents

  • 2014 consensus bug: Shortly after launch, Stellar’s original Ripple-derived consensus mechanism was found to have a critical flaw that could halt the network, prompting the team to halt the network and rebuild its consensus protocol from scratch as SCP — an early stumble that delayed the project’s momentum.
  • Centralization critiques: Similar to the XRP Ledger, Stellar has faced recurring criticism that the Stellar Development Foundation’s large XLM holdings and influence over the network’s direction sit awkwardly with claims of decentralization, even as SDF has periodically burned large amounts of its XLM holdings to address this criticism.
  • Modest real-world traction: Despite prominent partnership announcements over the years, critics have pointed to a gap between Stellar’s high-profile institutional pilots and the scale of durable, ongoing production usage.
