Overview
Solana is a high-performance Layer 1 blockchain built around Proof of History, a cryptographic clock that lets the network order transactions before consensus is reached, enabling it to process transactions in parallel at throughput far higher than Bitcoin or Ethereum. It has become one of the most widely used chains for DeFi, NFTs, and, more recently, retail-facing memecoin trading.
History
Origins
Anatoly Yakovenko, a former Qualcomm engineer, published the Proof of History whitepaper in 2017 and co-founded Solana Labs with Greg Fitzgerald and Raj Gokal in 2018. The mainnet beta launched in March 2020. The project drew early backing from prominent crypto-focused venture firms, and — significantly for its later history — developed a close relationship with Sam Bankman-Fried’s FTX exchange and Alameda Research, which became one of SOL’s largest holders and most vocal promoters.
Funding
Solana raised roughly $25 million across several private token sale rounds in 2018 and 2019 from investors including Multicoin Capital and others, followed by a public sale in 2020. Its funding was notably smaller than many rival L1s at a comparable stage, with much of its later valuation growth coming from secondary market price appreciation rather than primary fundraising.
Technology
Consensus Algorithm
Solana’s signature innovation is Proof of History: a verifiable delay function that timestamps transactions before they are grouped into blocks, letting validators agree on ordering without extensive communication. This is combined with a Proof-of-Stake-based Tower BFT consensus mechanism for finality, and a parallelized transaction execution engine (historically called Sealevel) that lets non-overlapping transactions execute simultaneously.
Network & Ecosystem
Solana operates as a single, monolithic high-throughput chain rather than a hub-and-spoke or rollup-based design, prioritizing raw base-layer performance. Its ecosystem is anchored by DeFi protocols, the Metaplex NFT standard, and in 2023–2024 an explosion of memecoin trading activity driven in part by the Pump.fun launchpad, alongside mobile initiatives (the Saga phone) aimed at driving consumer adoption.
Smart Contracts
Solana programs (its term for smart contracts) are most commonly written in Rust (and, less commonly, C or C++), compiled to BPF bytecode, and executed on Solana’s runtime — a notably different developer experience from the EVM’s Solidity-based model, which has both limited cross-chain portability of Solana code and attracted developers specifically seeking its performance characteristics.
Use Cases
Solana’s original goal was to prove that a single blockchain could achieve centralized-exchange-like throughput (tens of thousands of transactions per second, in theory) without sacrificing decentralization. In practice, it has become a leading venue for on-chain trading — DeFi, NFTs, and especially high-volume, low-cost memecoin issuance and speculation — where transaction speed and near-zero fees matter more than the raw programmability tradeoffs of the EVM.
Controversies & Incidents
- Network outages: Solana suffered a string of significant outages and multi-hour halts between 2021 and 2022 — often triggered by resource exhaustion from bot-driven transaction spam — that critics pointed to as evidence its performance came at the cost of network resilience and decentralization.
- FTX and Alameda collapse (2022): Solana was one of the tokens and ecosystems most closely identified with Sam Bankman-Fried, whose FTX exchange and Alameda Research were major SOL holders and ecosystem backers. FTX’s November 2022 collapse triggered a severe crash in SOL’s price and cast a shadow over the ecosystem’s prospects, from which it later recovered substantially.
- Centralization concerns: Solana’s validator hardware requirements are demanding relative to many competitors, and a meaningful share of stake and infrastructure has historically been concentrated among a relatively small number of large validators and Solana Labs-affiliated entities, fueling ongoing debate about how decentralized the network truly is.
