NEAR Protocol is a proof-of-stake, sharded smart contract platform designed with an emphasis on developer and end-user usability — including human-readable account names and a design philosophy aimed at reducing the friction of building and using decentralized applications compared to earlier chains.

History

Origins

NEAR was founded by Illia Polosukhin, a former Google engineer who worked on machine learning research (including TensorFlow), and Alexander Skidanov, a former Microsoft and MemSQL engineer. The two began collaborating in 2017 on scalability research before founding NEAR Inc. and launching the NEAR mainnet in April 2020.

NEAR raised capital across several private rounds beginning in 2018, reportedly totaling more than $30 million from investors including a16z crypto, Pantera Capital, and Coinbase Ventures, alongside additional public and ecosystem-focused token sales as the network matured.

Consensus Algorithm

NEAR uses proof-of-stake validation combined with “Nightshade,” its dynamic sharding design, which splits transaction processing across multiple shards that are combined into a single conceptual block, aiming to scale throughput as demand grows without requiring users to reason about which shard they are on.

Network & Ecosystem

NEAR operates as its own independent Layer 1 rather than joining the Ethereum, Cosmos, or Polkadot families, though it has built bridges (such as the Rainbow Bridge) to Ethereum for asset transfers, and has increasingly marketed itself around AI-agent and “user-owned AI” narratives in addition to conventional DeFi and dApp use cases.

Smart Contracts

NEAR smart contracts are compiled to WebAssembly and can be written in Rust or AssemblyScript, chosen specifically to lower the barrier to entry for mainstream web developers relative to learning a blockchain-specific language like Solidity.
