Overview
Monero is the most widely used privacy-focused cryptocurrency, designed so that transaction amounts, sender addresses, and receiver addresses are obscured by default for every transaction, rather than privacy being an optional feature as with Bitcoin’s pseudonymous-but-transparent ledger.
History
Origins
Monero launched in April 2014 as a fork of Bytecoin, one of the first implementations of the CryptoNote protocol. After community members discovered irregularities in Bytecoin’s initial distribution (a large share of its supply had already been mined before public launch), a group of developers forked the codebase to create a fairer, community-driven alternative, originally named BitMonero and quickly renamed Monero (Esperanto for “coin”). A core team of pseudonymous and named developers, including Riccardo Spagni (“fluffypony”), led its early development.
Funding
Monero has never held a premine or ICO. Development has instead been funded on an ongoing basis through the Forum Funding System and later the Community Crowdfunding System, in which the community directly donates to proposed development and research work.
Technology
Consensus Algorithm
Monero uses Proof of Work with RandomX, an algorithm specifically optimized for general-purpose CPUs and designed to resist the efficiency advantages of specialized ASIC mining hardware, in the interest of keeping mining decentralized and accessible.
Network & Ecosystem
Monero operates as an independent chain rather than as part of a larger interoperable ecosystem, and it has periodically implemented scheduled protocol upgrades (“hard forks”) partly as a deliberate strategy to stay ahead of ASIC manufacturers and maintain mining decentralization.
Smart Contracts
Monero does not support smart contracts. Its protocol is intentionally narrow in scope, focused entirely on private value transfer, using ring signatures, stealth addresses, and RingCT (confidential transactions) to hide transaction participants and amounts.
Use Cases
Monero’s original and ongoing goal is to provide genuinely fungible, private digital cash, where individual coins cannot be “tainted” or blacklisted based on transaction history — in contrast to Bitcoin, where the origin of any coin can be traced. It is used for privacy-preserving payments and has become the preferred cryptocurrency for transactions where the parties want to avoid public traceability.

- Association with ransomware and darknet markets: Monero’s privacy features have made it the preferred payment method for ransomware operators and dark web marketplaces, drawing sustained attention from law enforcement agencies, including reported U.S. government bounties offered for tools capable of tracing Monero transactions.
- Exchange delistings: Regulatory pressure tied to anti-money-laundering rules has led a number of exchanges, particularly in Japan, South Korea, and parts of Europe, to delist Monero and other privacy coins over the years, reducing its accessibility on regulated platforms.
- Regulatory scrutiny of privacy coins generally: Monero is frequently cited by name in regulatory discussions and enforcement actions concerning privacy-enhancing cryptocurrencies, positioning it at the center of an ongoing tension between financial privacy and anti-money-laundering compliance.
