Overview

Ethereum Classic is the continuation of Ethereum’s original, unaltered transaction history. It exists because a portion of the Ethereum community refused to accept a 2016 hard fork that reversed a major hack, arguing that “code is law” and that a blockchain’s history must remain immutable no matter the cost.

History

Origins

Ethereum Classic was not created as a new project but as the surviving branch of Ethereum itself. When The DAO — a decentralized venture fund built on Ethereum — was drained of roughly 3.6 million ETH by an attacker exploiting a reentrancy bug in June 2016, the majority of the Ethereum community backed a hard fork to effectively undo the theft and return the funds. A minority of miners, developers, and users rejected this on principle, continuing to mine and support the original, unforked chain under the name Ethereum Classic starting around July 2016.

Funding

Because it is the original Ethereum chain rather than a new launch, Ethereum Classic never ran its own token sale. Its initial coin distribution is simply Ethereum’s original 2014 presale and mining allocation, inherited wholesale at the moment of the split.

Technology

Consensus Algorithm

Ethereum Classic has remained committed to Proof of Work even as Ethereum itself moved to Proof of Stake, using Etchash (a variant of the Ethash algorithm) for mining. This choice is deliberate and closely tied to the project’s “immutability” ethos.

Network & Ecosystem

Ethereum Classic is part of the broader EVM-compatible ecosystem and remains compatible with much of Ethereum’s tooling (wallets, block explorers, and Solidity-based contracts), even though its developer and application ecosystem is far smaller than Ethereum’s.

Smart Contracts

Ethereum Classic runs the same EVM model as Ethereum, supporting smart contracts written in Solidity or Vyper. In practice, contract deployment and usage on ETC is a small fraction of activity on Ethereum or other major EVM chains.

Use Cases

Ethereum Classic’s stated goal is to be the philosophically “pure” continuation of Ethereum’s original vision: an immutable, censorship-resistant ledger where transaction history is never altered, even to reverse theft. In practice it functions mainly as a proof-of-work store-of-value asset and a niche smart-contract platform, with far less DeFi or NFT activity than Ethereum.

Controversies & Incidents

  • Origin in the DAO fork dispute: Ethereum Classic’s entire existence is a controversy — a rejection of Ethereum’s decision to reverse the DAO hack, framed by ETC proponents as a matter of protocol integrity and by critics as clinging to a chain that enabled a well-known hacker to keep stolen funds.
  • Repeated 51% attacks (2019–2020): Ethereum Classic’s relatively low mining hash rate compared to its market value made it a repeated target for 51% attacks, with multiple deep chain reorganizations reported in January 2019 and again in August 2020, allowing attackers to double-spend tens of millions of dollars worth of ETC on exchanges. These incidents badly damaged confidence in the network’s security guarantees.
  • Ongoing centralization risk: ETC’s security has periodically depended on a small number of large mining pools, raising recurring concerns about how resistant the chain really is to further attacks.
